Several employees of Economic Research Institute (that was dissolved by the government) as well as banks, employer organisations and 154 renowned economists established GKI Economic Research Co. in October, 1992. At present nearly 90 per cent of the shares are owned by the management of GKI. In 2001 and 2002 GKI was developed into a group of companies.

Since 2004 GKI has had ISO9001 qualification. In 2016, GKI has won the Magyar Brands award on the seventh consecutive time and the Excellent Business Brand Stamp on the first time.

GKI is sensitive to the political feasibility of economic objectives and to its social context. The objective of GKI is to strengthen the company as an internationally acknowledged, objective research institution. With the unbiased analysis of socio-economic trends GKI is a measure of adjustment for economists, the business sector and the general public.
